It is a condition where breathing pauses and then starts again while the person is sleeping.1 Factors that would put one at risk for this condition are obesity, enlarged tonsils, jaw problems, or hypothyroidism.1,2

If you suffer from hypothyroidism, you may experience sleep apnea as one of the many possible thyroid symptoms. Sleep apnea in hypothyroidism results from an obstruction of the upper airway.1 The tongue can become enlarged, and protein accumulation can pull water into the airway causing swelling.1,3
