Premature hair loss is one of the more psychologically distressing hypothyroidism symptoms that people experience.1

Thyroid hormones are necessary for initiating and maintaining hair growth, and hair cells are particularly sensitive to the concentration of thyroid hormones in the body.2

When there is a decrease in thyroid hormones, the quality and quantity of a person’s hair are at risk of diminishing.3 The loss is widespread, affecting the entire scalp rather than specific areas. The hair appears scarce all around.1

If you are experiencing hair loss, it is a good idea to speak to your doctor about having your thyroid checked.
